City/County Safety Assistance
On city and county roads and streets, traffic crashes may occur because some local agencies do not have a method for identifying and correcting potential roadway safety hazards. Substandard safety features may not only result in an increased number of accidents, but also in their severity. As a result, cities and counties without a systematic method for improving the safety features on their road and street systems increase the risk for accidents and the potential for tort claim lawsuits. In response to this need, the Texas Department of Transportation requested the Texas LTAP Center to develop a Safety Assistance Project for Counties and Small Urban Areas. Funding for the project is provided by the Federal Highway Administration through the 402 Program. The project involves a safety orientation for local officials and staff responsible for the administrative, engineering, and maintenance operations of the transportation system. Following the orientation, a field review is conducted to observe existing conditions and discuss options for safety improvements.

TACERA
LTAP continues to enjoy an excellent reputation with the Texas Association of County Engineers and Road Administrators (TACERA). The organization was involved in planning for the Texas Association of County Engineers' 1994 and 1995 Annual Conferences, held in November 1994 and planned again for November 1995. TACERA, assisted by the LTAP center, strives to provide their members and other local county officials concerned with highway and transportation matters the latest information on issues currently affecting their operations, such as ISTEA and SHRP matters. Visit the TACERA website.
